If you’re missing a single tooth, a dental implant can provide a secure, natural-looking replacement that looks, feels, and functions much like a natural tooth. Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant doesn’t rely on the teeth next to it for support. Instead, it replaces the missing tooth root with a small titanium implant anchored in the jaw, providing a strong foundation for your new tooth. At Greenfield Dental, this treatment is provided by highly-experienced implant dentist Dr. Lion Berzin.
How a single dental implant works
A single dental implant has three main parts, each with a specific role in replacing your missing tooth.
1 Titanium implant
A small titanium post is placed in the jaw to take the place of the natural tooth root. Titanium is very strong and integrates well with the surrounding bone.
2 Abutment
A small connector attached to the implant that provides a secure foundation for the dental crown.
3 Crown
The visible part of your new tooth. A custom-made crown is designed to match your natural teeth and complete your smile.
The steps in a single implant procedure
Every treatment is different, but the process always involves several stages. Dr. Berzin will explain each step and make sure you know what to expect before treatment begins.
1 Planning
Careful planning helps ensure your implant is placed with precision. Advanced digital imaging, including Cone Beam CT scanning, provides a detailed 3D view of your jaw, teeth, bone, and surrounding structures. This information allows Dr. Berzin to assess your individual anatomy and plan the placement of your implant with a high degree of precision.
2 Preparation
If necessary, the area may need to be prepared before the implant can be placed. This could include removing a damaged tooth or, in some cases, a bone graft to create a suitable foundation.
3 Implant placement
Once the site is ready, the titanium implant is carefully placed into the jaw according to your individualized treatment plan.
4 Healing and abutment placement
The implant needs time to integrate with the surrounding bone and become a stable foundation. Once healing is complete, the abutment is attached to the implant.
5 Your new tooth
A custom-made dental crown is created to complement your natural teeth and attached to the abutment. Your new implant is now complete!
The benefits of a single dental implant
A stronger, more natural bite
An implant provides a secure foundation for your replacement tooth, so you can chew more comfortably.
A natural-looking smile
Your crown is custom-made to match your existing teeth, helping your new tooth blend naturally into your smile.
Support for your jawbone
The presence of an implant can help maintain the bone around the missing tooth, which can otherwise gradually deteriorate after tooth loss.
No need to rely on neighbouring teeth
Unlike a traditional bridge, a single implant is independently-supported rather than attached to adjacent teeth.
Easy everyday care
Once your implant has healed, you can generally care for it much like your natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits.
